World War II Hero And Beloved TikTok Star "Papa Jake" Passes Away at 102
Jake Larson, the spirited World War II veteran who captured hearts on social media as “Papa Jake,” has passed away at the age of 102. His granddaughter, McKaela Larson, announced the news on his social media accounts on Saturday.
“Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young,” she wrote. “Please know, he went peacefully and was even cracking jokes till the very end.”
Larson, a member of America’s “Greatest Generation,” became a viral sensation later in life through his TikTok account, @storytimewithpapajake. With over a million followers, he shared stories of bravery, loss, humor, and history, recounting his remarkable journey from small-town boy to D-Day veteran.
Remembering D-Day
In June 2024, Larson was in Normandy, France, for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion — a battle he lived through firsthand. Sitting near the very shoreline where Allied forces landed, he recalled the moment with crystal clarity.
“I got off the landing craft and had water right up to my chin,” he said. “We were all kids.”
He had joined the National Guard at age 15 by lying about his age, driven by a deep sense of purpose. Despite his humility, Larson’s actions and stories left a lasting impression on all who heard them.
“I don’t think I was a hero,” he said. “We were all in this together.” He often emphasized that he spoke not just for himself, but for the many friends he lost in the war.
When asked whether he and others knew what they were fighting for, Larson answered without hesitation: “Oh, definitely. Every one of us was prepared to give our life to kick Hitler’s ass out of Europe. … And we did.”
A Life Worthy of Honor
Just weeks before his passing, Larson was celebrated when the journalist who interviewed him in Normandy received an Emmy and chose to share the honor with him. In a video reaction, Larson beamed with pride:
“It’s phenomenal. And here I am, little country boy that joins the infantry at 15 years old and I come here now, 102, going on 103 and I’m winning something like this? There is a God.”
His son, Karlan Larson, described his father’s life as “epic.” The Emmy award now sits proudly in the family’s living room, a symbol of Jake’s legacy that will be handed down among his grandchildren.
Jake Larson’s story — one of sacrifice, survival, and humor — resonated with generations young and old. From storming the beaches of Normandy to entertaining millions on TikTok, “Papa Jake” reminded the world that even in old age, life can be full of purpose, courage, and connection.
He will be remembered not only as a soldier, but as a storyteller, grandfather, and national treasure.
