U.S. Warns: No Visas For “Birth Tourism” Travelers

The United States government has issued a stern warning against the use of tourist visas for the purpose of giving birth in the country, stating that such actions could lead to visa denial and long-term immigration consequences.

This announcement is part of a wider crackdown on “birth tourism” — a practice where foreign nationals travel to the U.S. on temporary visas with the primary aim of delivering a baby, thereby securing automatic American citizenship for the child.

In a statement shared on Monday, July 28, through its official social media channels, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria made its position clear:

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted. Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent,” the message read.

The U.S. government emphasized the importance of honesty during visa applications and warned that misrepresenting the purpose of travel could have serious immigration consequences down the line.

According to the U.S. Department of State, consular officers have strict instructions to deny any visa application if there is credible evidence suggesting that the applicant’s main reason for visiting is to give birth in the U.S. for the sake of citizenship acquisition.

The warning serves as a clear reminder: tourist visas are for tourism — not for gaming the citizenship system.
