8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Off Russia Triggers Tsunami Warnings Across The Pacific
A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Russia on Wednesday, setting off tsunami waves that rippled across the Pacific Ocean and prompted widespread warnings in multiple countries.
Tsunami advisories and evacuation alerts were issued for coastal areas in Russia, Japan, the Philippines, Chile, Peru, Indonesia, and Ecuador, as well as across parts of the United States, including Hawaii, Alaska, and the West Coast.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that tsunami waves began hitting Hawaii by early evening local time. A wave exceeding 5 feet was recorded in Kahului, located on the north-central coast of Maui.
Smaller waves followed along the shores of Washington, Oregon, and California in the early morning hours. Although the initial waves have passed, officials warned that hazardous currents and additional surges may continue for several hours.
So far, reports indicate minimal damage across affected regions. Emergency officials, however, continue to urge residents and visitors to remain cautious and stay clear of coastal areas until all warnings are lifted.
