Trump Defends Bolsonaro, Sparks U.S.-Brazil Diplomatic Firestorm
Relations between the United States and Brazil took a dramatic turn on Monday, July 7, after U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at Brazil’s prosecution of former president Jair Bolsonaro, calling it a “WITCH HUNT” and urging authorities to “LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE.”
Trump’s explosive remarks, posted on his Truth Social platform, drew a sharp rebuke from Brazil’s current president, Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, who accused the former U.S. leader of interfering in Brazil’s internal affairs. “No one is above the law,” Lula stated firmly.
Bolsonaro, 70, is currently facing trial on serious charges of leading a “criminal organization” in an alleged attempt to orchestrate a coup following his 2022 election loss. Prosecutors say the plot fell apart after failing to gain support from Brazil’s military leadership. If convicted, Bolsonaro could face up to 40 years in prison.
The case has drawn international attention, with many comparing it to Trump’s own legal troubles in the U.S., particularly his indictment over the January 6 Capitol riot — a case that was later dropped following his return to the White House and the immunity that comes with the presidency.
Like Trump, Bolsonaro insists he is innocent and the target of political persecution. He has continued to rally his supporters, further fueling Brazil’s deep political divisions.
The two populist leaders — and their families — have grown increasingly close in recent years. Bolsonaro’s sons have reportedly lobbied U.S. officials to take a harder stance against Brazil’s Supreme Court, and Trump’s recent outburst suggests those efforts may be paying off. Diplomatic experts warn of rising tensions between the two nations as a result.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, a Brazilian congressman and son of the former president, praised Trump’s comments and hinted that more pro-Bolsonaro moves from the U.S. could be on the way.
Though Bolsonaro is currently banned from running for office due to spreading false claims about Brazil’s electoral system, Trump argued he remains the people’s choice for 2026. “They’ve come after him non-stop — just like they did with me,” Trump wrote. “He was a strong leader, a tough trade negotiator, and he truly loved his country.”
Bolsonaro responded on social media, thanking Trump for his “defense of peace, justice and liberty.”
Trump’s remarks coincided with the BRICS summit hosted by Lula in Rio de Janeiro, which welcomed leaders from China, Russia, Iran, and other nations. The summit openly criticized Trump’s foreign policy record, including his tariffs and past military actions — especially the bombing of Iran. In response, Trump threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on all BRICS-aligned countries.
President Lula, undeterred, asserted the sovereignty of the BRICS nations and issued a pointed remark: “We do not want an emperor.”
As global alliances shift and tensions rise, the fallout from Trump’s intervention could reshape not only U.S.-Brazil relations, but the geopolitical landscape across the Americas.
