Liverpool To Honour Diogo Jota’s Contract In Full Following Tragic Death At 28
Premier League champions Liverpool will pay the remaining balance of Diogo Jota's contract to his family after the Portuguese forward tragically died in a car crash at the age of 28.
Jota and his younger brother, Andre, lost their lives in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, following a fatal collision in Spain.
Jota, who extended his contract with Liverpool in 2022 for five years, was earning a reported £140,000 per week—totalling approximately £7.2 million per year. The club will now pay his family a sum close to £14.5 million, covering the final two years of his contract in full.
This compassionate move highlights Liverpool's deep respect for Jota and their commitment to supporting his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
A devoted father of three, Jota passed away just two weeks after marrying his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and went on to make 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and assisting 26 more.
During his time at Anfield, he helped Liverpool secure the Premier League title last season and also lifted the FA Cup and two League Cups.
His sudden passing has left a profound void in the football world, with fans, teammates, and the club mourning the loss of a talented player and beloved family man.
