Tragic Loss: Nigerian TikTok Moderator Found Dead In Kenya Under Mysterious Circumstances

A Nigerian woman working as a TikTok content moderator in Kenya, Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi, has been found dead under unclear circumstances, sparking outrage and renewed concerns about the harsh working conditions faced by content moderators.

Olubunmi, who was employed by Teleperformance—a company contracted to moderate TikTok content—was discovered dead in her Nairobi apartment on Friday, March 7, 2025. Her body, already decomposing, was found three days after her death.

Her tragic death has sent shockwaves through the content moderation community in Kenya. Colleagues held a vigil for Olubunmi on Tuesday, March 11, mourning her loss and calling attention to the difficult working environment.

Denied Leave and Overworked

According to CNN journalist Larry Madowo, Olubunmi’s coworkers claim that she had been repeatedly denied leave, despite being entitled to one return ticket home each year. Since moving to Kenya in 2022, she had not been able to visit Nigeria.

Colleagues said Olubunmi had expressed exhaustion and a strong desire to return home, a trip she had been unable to make for two years due to work and immigration issues.

Despite these claims, Teleperformance Kenya denied allegations that Olubunmi was denied leave, calling them “baseless and untrue.” However, colleagues insist that many Nigerian employees lack proper work permits, preventing them from using their return tickets to travel home.

Poor Working Conditions Highlighted

Olubunmi’s death has reignited discussions about the mental toll of content moderation. Fellow moderators—including those working for other tech giants—attended the vigil, highlighting poor pay, lack of mental health support, and long working hours as major concerns.

Her friend, Kauna Malgwi, revealed that over 100 Nigerian workers at Teleperformance face similar struggles, unable to use their annual return tickets due to immigration challenges.

Family Seeking Answers

Olubunmi’s family, who had not seen her since she left for Kenya, are now demanding answers. They also face the difficult task of arranging her burial, possibly in Nairobi, due to financial constraints.

The cause of Olubunmi’s death remains unknown, but her death has cast a harsh spotlight on the demanding and often overlooked challenges faced by content moderators worldwide.
