LeBron Confronts Stephen A. Smith Over Criticism Of Bronny

During a heated moment at the Los Angeles Lakers vs. New York Knicks game, LeBron James and NBA personality Stephen A. Smith appeared to have a tense exchange. Speculation quickly spread that the confrontation was about LeBron's son, Bronny James.

Smith has been vocal about Bronny's struggles since the Lakers drafted him, and it seems LeBron has finally had enough. Known for usually taking the high road when it comes to media criticism, LeBron made it clear that things are different when it comes to his son.

Smith Confirms It Was About Bronny

While speaking on ESPN's First Take, Smith confirmed that the exchange was indeed about Bronny.

"That was LeBron James coming up to me — unexpectedly, I might add — to confront me about making sure I mind what I say about his son. I can't repeat the words because they aren't suited for FCC airwaves. That’s what he was doing," Smith explained. "Now, I thought long and hard about this over the last few hours because I had no intention of talking about it at all. The reason is that it was a one-on-one — I wouldn't say conversation, but a confrontation. That wasn't a basketball player confronting me — that was a parent, a father. And I can't sit here and be angry or feel slighted by LeBron James in any way."

LeBron's Rare Show of Emotion

LeBron has largely taken a hands-off approach with the media this season, likely due to the pressure surrounding Bronny's entry into the league. But this incident shows that when it comes to his son, LeBron is willing to step in and defend him.

Smith noted that LeBron could have addressed the situation differently.

"For the record, his agent and friend Rich Paul has my number. Maverick Carter, who works with him, has my number. LeBron James knows how to reach me if he wanted to. He never called. Had he called and wanted to talk to me, I would have accepted that call. If he wanted to meet with me, I would have flown out."

What Smith Would Have Said

Smith went on to explain what he would have said if they had spoken under different circumstances.

"What I would have said if we were in a different environment — because I wasn’t going to engage in a confrontation in that particular moment — is that I would never speak negatively about your son. I was talking about you. I have nothing but the best wishes for Bronny James."

Respectful Response From Smith

Smith’s response was measured and respectful, even though he’s known for his sharp commentary. LeBron’s reaction suggests that he holds Smith’s opinion in higher regard than most other critics — which likely made the comments hit harder.

This situation is far from over. Basketball fans will be watching closely to see if LeBron addresses it further — or if Smith decides to fire back.
