Princess Catherine Joins King Charles For Commonwealth Day Celebrations
Catherine, Princess of Wales, joined King Charles III and other members of the royal family on Monday to celebrate Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey. The annual event featured performances from various nations across the Commonwealth, a voluntary association of 56 countries representing 2.7 billion people, united by shared values of democracy, peace, and development.
A Royal Gathering
The King led the service alongside Queen Camilla, with Catherine and Prince William in attendance. This marks Catherine’s return to the event after missing it last year. The couple participated in hymns and the UK’s national anthem while enjoying the diverse cultural performances. Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also present.
Among the highlights was a performance by singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading, who delivered an arrangement of her classic 1976 ballad Love and Affection. A team from Masai Cultural Arts, showcasing traditional singing, percussion, acrobatics, and dance, also took the stage.
A Significant Year for the Royals
Catherine’s appearance is part of her gradual return to royal duties after stepping back from public life early last year. In March 2024, she revealed her cancer diagnosis and has since announced she is in remission.
King Charles also returned to the event for the first time in two years, having missed last year’s celebration due to his own battle with cancer.
In a written address for the occasion, Charles emphasized the unity and resilience of the Commonwealth:
"In these uncertain times, where it is all too easy to believe that our differences are problems instead of a source of strength and an opportunity for learning, the Commonwealth’s remarkable collection of nations and peoples come together in the spirit of support and, crucially, friendship.”
This year’s Commonwealth Day theme, “Together We Thrive,” highlights the unity and enduring strength of the Commonwealth family.
A Day of Festivities
Beyond the Westminster Abbey service, King Charles officially launched the inaugural King’s Baton Relay at Buckingham Palace, marking the countdown to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. He and Queen Camilla also attended a reception hosted by Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Scotland, where they were treated to a special performance of a commemorative song by Andrew Lloyd Webber in honor of the new Commonwealth Peace Prize.
Adding a modern twist to the celebrations, the King collaborated with Apple Music to curate a special playlist featuring some of his favorite tracks from around the Commonwealth. Artists such as Bob Marley, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter RAYE, and Australian pop star Kylie Minogue were among those included.
The day’s events underscored the Commonwealth’s ongoing mission to foster connection, culture, and collaboration among its member nations.
