Senator Natasha Takes Fight To UN Over Suspension And Alleged Political Revenge

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central in the National Assembly, has called for justice over her suspension from the Senate. Speaking at the Women in Parliament Session during the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting, Natasha described her suspension as politically motivated and an act of revenge. She urged global democratic institutions to intervene, claiming that her removal was unlawful and targeted.

Why Was Natasha Suspended?

Senator Natasha was suspended for allegedly violating the Senate's standing orders. However, she insists that the real reason behind her suspension is her outspoken stance against injustice.

In an emotional address at the United Nations, Natasha raised concerns about her safety, suggesting that her outspokenness at the global level could lead to her being unlawfully detained in New York. A video shared by Legit.ng showed the senator in tears as she presented her case to the UN gathering.

Clash with Senate President Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

Before her suspension, Natasha had a confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over a seating arrangement. She later appeared on a television program, accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment—a claim that the Senate President has strongly denied.

Natasha has since submitted a petition against Akpabio, but the Senate Committee on Ethics rejected it, citing procedural issues. The same committee later recommended her suspension. Despite the setback, Natasha resubmitted the petition, fueling further tension within the Senate.

Mixed Reactions from Nigerians

The rejection of Natasha's petition has sparked mixed reactions across Nigeria. While some have called for Akpabio to step aside and allow an independent investigation, others have urged for strict adherence to Senate rules.

During an International Women's Day event, Senate President Akpabio maintained his innocence, noting that previous allegations by Natasha against other individuals had all been dismissed.

Repeated Violations or Political Witch-Hunt?

Reports indicate that Natasha has allegedly violated Senate standing rules multiple times. However, she claims that her troubles began after rejecting unwanted advances from Akpabio.

As the controversy escalates, Senator Natasha's call for international support signals that the political storm surrounding her suspension is far from over.
