Presidency Fires Back At Peter Obi Over Democracy Collapse Claims
The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, has warned former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, to stop making what he described as reckless and unguarded statements.
Obi, speaking at a public event in Abuja on Monday, March 24, claimed that democracy under the current administration had collapsed.
In response, Onanuga issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing Obi’s remarks and arguing that Nigeria’s democracy has remained resilient and has continued to strengthen since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
"How can a democracy that has endured and grown over the past 26 years be said to have collapsed?" Onanuga questioned, adding that Obi himself is a beneficiary of the free speech and political freedoms provided by the system.
Onanuga urged Obi to be more responsible with his statements, warning him against making sensational comments for political gain.
At the event, Obi argued that democracy in Nigeria had suffered a serious setback due to the actions and decisions of the current leadership. He stated:
