Nigerian Artistes Earn Over N58 Billion On Spotify In 2024 As Global Popularity Soars

Spotify, a leading digital music, podcast, and video streaming platform, has revealed that Nigerian artistes earned over N58 billion in royalties on the platform in 2024 — more than double the amount earned in 2023 and five times higher than in 2022. The impressive growth highlights the soaring success of Nigerian music on the global stage.

The data was unveiled during Spotify’s 2024 Loud & Clear announcement event held on Thursday in Lagos.

According to Spotify, the number of Nigerian artistes earning at least N10 million in royalties has doubled compared to 2023 and tripled since 2022. First-time listeners also discovered Nigerian artistes more than one billion times on the platform in 2024, reflecting the growing global appetite for Nigerian music.

More than 1,900 Nigerian artistes were added to Spotify’s editorial playlists in 2024 — a 33% increase from the previous year. A significant portion of the N58 billion in royalties came from listeners outside Nigeria, underscoring the international appeal of Nigerian music. Global audiences spent over 1.1 million hours streaming songs by Nigerian artistes, and approximately 250 million playlists featuring Nigerian artistes were created worldwide.

“Nigerian artistes have seen a 49% increase in music exports over the past three years,” the report stated. “Local consumption of Nigerian content has grown by 206% year-over-year and surged by an astonishing 782% over the last three years.”

Spotify credited this financial success to increased global recognition, prominent playlist placements, and a surge in music exports — reinforcing Nigeria’s status as a global music powerhouse.

Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, celebrated the achievement, saying, “We remain committed to empowering Nigerian artistes to earn from their art while maintaining transparency with artistes and stakeholders. The incredible growth of Nigerian music, both locally and globally, is a testament to the talent and creativity within Nigeria, and we are proud to support its continued rise.”

The remarkable success of Nigerian artistes on Spotify reflects the growing influence of Afrobeats and other Nigerian music genres worldwide, positioning Nigeria as a dominant force in the global music industry.
