Goodluck Jonathan Wins 2025 Sunhak Peace Award, Becomes First African Honoree
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been named the winner of the 2025 Founder’s Sunhak Peace Award, to be presented by the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation in Seoul, South Korea.
In a statement released on Monday night, March 23, by his Special Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, it was announced that Jonathan is the third recipient and the first African leader to win this prestigious category. He follows in the footsteps of former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The 2025 award ceremony — the sixth edition of the event — is scheduled to take place in Seoul on Friday, April 11, 2025. Dr. Jonathan and other laureates will be honored for their outstanding contributions to global peace and human development.
Why Jonathan Was Chosen
According to the Sunhak Peace Prize Committee, Jonathan is being recognized for his unwavering mediation efforts and pro-democracy initiatives aimed at fostering peace across Africa. His work is particularly evident through the organizations he leads, including the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF), the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), and the International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP).
The Sunhak Peace Prize is presented biennially in two categories: the Founder’s Sunhak Peace Award and the Sunhak Peace Prize. Both awards honor individuals and organizations making significant contributions to global peace and human development.
Past and Present Honorees
Past recipients of the Sunhak Peace Prize include former Senegalese President Macky Sall, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Akinwumi Adesina, Dame Sarah Catherine Gilbert (co-developer of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine), and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance.
Jonathan will receive his award alongside three other laureates announced by José Manuel Durão Barroso, Chair of the Sunhak Peace Prize Committee and former President of the European Commission. The other winners are:

A Testament to Peace and Leadership
Hak Ja Han Moon, the founder of the Sunhak Peace Prize, stated in her pre-event address that the lives of the laureates serve as a powerful testament to how peace can be achieved through concrete actions and cultural transformation.
