Prince Frederik Of Luxembourg Passes Away At 22 After Lifelong Battle With Rare Disease
Prince Frederik of Luxembourg, the youngest son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau, has passed away at the age of 22 after a lifelong struggle with POLG mitochondrial disease.
Frederik died in Paris on March 1, his family announced in a statement on the POLG Foundation’s website. “One light was extinguished, but so many remain,” his father said.
A Battle with POLG Mitochondrial Disease
POLG is a rare genetic disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce energy at the cellular level, leading to progressive organ dysfunction and failure. Frederik was diagnosed at age 14, though the disease’s complex symptoms often make it difficult to identify.
His passing came just one day after Rare Disease Day, which raises awareness for the estimated 300 million people worldwide living with rare conditions.
“These diseases are usually hard to recognize, even by physicians, and many families may never fully understand what their loved ones are suffering from,” said his father, Prince Robert.
Currently, there is no known cure or treatment for POLG.
“One might compare it to having a faulty battery that never fully recharges, is in a constant state of depletion, and eventually loses power,” Robert explained.
A Legacy of Advocacy and Hope
Despite his condition, Frederik dedicated himself to raising awareness and supporting research for POLG and other rare diseases. He founded the POLG Foundation in 2022, participated in medical trials, and worked to explore potential treatments that could help others with his condition.
Frederik’s final days were spent surrounded by loved ones. His father shared that he found the strength to say goodbye to each of his family members individually, including his brother Alexander, sister Charlotte, cousins Charly, Louis, and Donall, as well as his brother-in-law Mansour and his Aunt Charlotte and Uncle Mark.
“Though Prince Frederik always made it very clear that he did not want the dreadful disease to define him, he devoted himself to spreading awareness,” the family said in their statement.
Prince Robert, a first cousin of Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri, is 15th in line to the throne.
Frederik’s legacy lives on through the foundation he created, which continues its mission to find therapies and a cure for POLG mitochondrial disease.
