FG Assures Corps Members Of Backdated ₦77,000 Allowance Payments
The Federal Government has reassured corps members that they will receive the backlog of their delayed ₦77,000 monthly allowance.
On September 25, 2024, the government announced an increase in the monthly stipend for serving corps members from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000. However, the new payment structure has yet to be implemented despite repeated promises.
Tensions rose last week after a corps member’s viral complaint highlighted the financial struggles of surviving on ₦33,000 per month. In response, the new Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, announced that the new allowance would take effect in March 2025.
In a renewed commitment, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, confirmed that corps members serving when the increment was announced would receive backdated payments.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, March 24, Olawande reassured corps members that the government remains committed to settling the backlog.
“You heard the new DG saying you will get it. They asked him, ‘What about those leaving now—will they receive the backlog?’ He said, ‘We have your details,’” Olawande stated.
He further assured that the payments would be made, though he cautioned that it might take some time.
“The backlog will be handled, and we will ensure it is paid. It may not be immediate, but it will happen,” he said.
