Tragic Explosion Rocks N’Djamena, Chad

On Tuesday evening, a massive explosion near Chad’s capital city of N’Djamena resulted in at least nine deaths and 46 injuries, according to a statement from the foreign minister.

Verified video footage captured at N’Djamena’s international airport shows a colossal fireball and sparks lighting up the night sky, illustrating the scale of the disaster.

Satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies reveals the extent of the damage, showing that 17 structures at the ammunition depot were completely destroyed. These destroyed structures were spread out in two distinct groups at opposite ends of the complex, raising questions about whether multiple explosions might have occurred.

The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, and it is unknown if multiple blasts were responsible for the widespread destruction.

“Our house shook as if we were under attack,” resident Moustapha Adoum Mahamat told Reuters following the blast. “Then we saw a massive fire at the military camp, with smoke and explosions in the air,” he recounted, adding, “We could see artillery flying over us.”

Despite the proximity of the explosion to the country’s main international airport, authorities confirmed that the airport remained unaffected.

Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno announced that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the explosion at the ammunition depot.
