Spacesuit Malfunction Halts Astronauts' Planned Spacewalk

Two US astronauts had to cancel their planned spacewalk for maintenance on the International Space Station (ISS) on Monday due to a malfunction in one of their spacesuits.

NASA officials called off the spacewalk after detecting a water leak in the cooling unit of astronaut Tracy Dyson’s suit. The issue arose just as the suits were switched to battery power, moments before Dyson and her crewmate Mike Barratt were set to exit the station.

The cooling units in the spacesuits are crucial for maintaining a comfortable temperature during spacewalks. Dyson and Barratt were preparing to remove a faulty electronics box from a communications antenna on the station's exterior when the problem was discovered.

“Right now, I’m comfortable, but I do feel a little warm,” Dyson reported during a live stream of the event, shortly after the spacewalk was aborted around 9 a.m. ET.

Dyson later raised concerns that the water leak might have compromised electrical connectors in her suit. “There’s still water shooting out,” she noted. “We can assume that water got into that connector, electrical connector.”

NASA swiftly worked to get Dyson back inside the ISS through the airlock while her suit remained on battery power. Despite the incident, NASA confirmed that the crew was never in any danger.

The spacewalk was originally scheduled to begin Monday morning and last approximately 6.5 hours. This cancellation adds to a series of recent operational setbacks on the ISS.

Just days before, on June 13, another spacewalk was called off due to a "spacesuit discomfort issue" affecting astronaut Matthew Dominick. NASA has not disclosed further details about this issue to protect Dominick’s privacy.

Despite the aborted spacewalk, NASA still plans to conduct another on July 2 before Boeing’s Starliner capsule undocks from the ISS for its return journey. The Starliner, on its first crewed test flight, has faced several challenges, including helium leaks and thruster outages, which have already delayed its return.

It's unclear whether the latest spacewalk cancellation will further impact the Starliner's schedule.
