Anthony Joshua: Why He Doesn't Want His Son To Follow In His Footsteps

British heavyweight Anthony Joshua believes it would not be a "wise decision" for his son to follow in his footsteps and become a professional boxer.

The two-time former unified world heavyweight champion expressed his thoughts on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, sharing that he would prefer if his son, Joseph Joshua, known as JJ, pursued a career in accountancy. Despite his own legendary status in boxing, Joshua wants his son to carve out his own future.

Previously, Joshua had stated he did not envision a boxing career for JJ, emphasizing his desire for his son to be the “best man that he can be.”

Speaking candidly on Desert Island Discs, Joshua confirmed that his views about his son’s future remain unchanged.

When advising JJ about his future, Joshua said he would tell him to "do the best you can do."

"If I were to choose a career for him, I would suggest he probably look into accountancy because it’s important to understand numbers," Joshua said.

Reflecting on his own career, Joshua mentioned how boxing helped him channel his energy during difficult times in his youth. He got into trouble with the police for fighting as a teenager and was homeless at 17. Boxing became a turning point for him when he entered the ring at 18.

Joshua’s story highlights the transformative power of sport, but he hopes JJ finds a path that provides stability and success outside the ring.
