Howard University Returning Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ $1 Million Donation Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations

TimesTalks Presents: An Evening With Sean "Diddy" Combs

Combs has denied all allegations against him.

Howard University announced Friday it will take back Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ honorary degree and return a seven-figure donation to the school, citing a video of the rapper attacking his ex-girlfriend—as Combs faces multiple sexual misconduct allegations, all of which he’s denied.

KEY FACTS

Howard University’s board of trustees unanimously voted to accept Combs’ return of an honorary degree given to him in 2014, the school said in a statement, noting his name will be removed from the university’s list of honorary degree recipients.

The university said Combs’ behavior in the 2016 video is so “fundamentally incompatible” with its core values and beliefs that the rapper is not worthy enough to keep the degree, which Howard University called its “highest honor.”

Combs, who attended Howard University from 1987 to 1989, will have a $1 million contribution to the school that dates back to 2016 returned to him and a scholarship program created in his name disbanded.

Howard University’s administration will also terminate a 2023 deal for the Sean Combs Foundation to donate another $1 million, though it said the foundation has not sent over that money yet so no donations need to be returned.

Combs’ scholarship was awarded to eligible undergraduate students who pursued a business degree and needed financial assistance, Billboard reported in 2016, also providing the students with a mentor from Combs Enterprises and a summer internship with Combs’ record label Bad Boy Entertainment or his media company, Revolt, which the rapper recently sold his majority stake in.

KEY BACKGROUND

Combs was hit with his seventh sexual assault lawsuit last month, including a lawsuit brought by ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura that was settled on undisclosed terms last year. Last month, CNN obtained a 2016 video that appeared to show Combs attacking Ventura in a hotel hallway, leading Combs to apologize. Meanwhile, federal agents searched Combs’ properties earlier this year, and investigators could reportedly bring his accusers to testify before a grand jury. No charges have been filed against Combs, It remains unclear whether charges will materialize.
