Outrage Erupts In Nairobi: Police Under Fire After Protester's Death

Kenya's Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the death of Rex Masai, a protester who was fatally shot during a massive anti-tax demonstration in Nairobi on Thursday. This incident has ignited widespread outrage and intensified scrutiny of police actions amid the escalating protests.

Rex Masai was participating in one of many protests against a controversial finance bill under discussion in parliament. He was allegedly shot with live ammunition by a police officer, according to authorities.

On Friday, the IPOA reported that it had "documented the death of Mr. Rex Masai allegedly as a result of police shooting and several serious injuries suffered by other demonstrators, including police officers."

A CNN team on the ground witnessed police tear-gassing protesters, leading to a journalist being injured by a canister. Earlier in the week, civil society groups reported that over 200 people had been detained in Nairobi during mass arrests.

"The Authority has this morning launched investigations into the fatal shooting, and our investigation team has since established contact with the family of Mr. Masai," stated the IPOA.

The IPOA has called for "continued restraint by the police" and urged the public "to be peaceful and conduct themselves within the confines of the law."
