Passenger Boat Capsizes In Sokoto, Dozens Feared Dead

A passenger boat tragedy struck Kojiyo Ward in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Sunday, August 17, 2025, leaving many feared dead and dozens still missing.

The ill-fated vessel, carrying more than 50 residents across the river to Goronyo Market, capsized midway, plunging its passengers into chaos and despair.

An eyewitness, Abubakar, recounted that several lives were lost in the accident, while many others remain unaccounted for as frantic rescue efforts stretched late into the evening.

Confirming the incident, the Sokoto Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it had swiftly deployed its response team to assist in the search.

NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, activated emergency protocols immediately after receiving the distress report.

“As of now, about 10 persons have been rescued, while more than 40 remain missing,” the agency stated. “NEMA, in collaboration with local authorities and emergency responders, is intensifying search and rescue operations to locate the missing passengers.”
