Bill Chisholm Seals Record-Breaking Boston Celtics Takeover
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has officially approved the blockbuster sale of the Boston Celtics to an investment group led by American billionaire Bill Chisholm — five months after the historic \$6.1 billion deal was struck.
“The NBA Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of the controlling interests in the Boston Celtics to an investor group led by Bill Chisholm,” the league confirmed in a statement. “The transaction is expected to close shortly.”
Chisholm, managing director and co-founder of Symphony Technology Group, joined forces with co-investors to secure the team at what was then the highest valuation ever for a North American sports franchise. That record has since been topped by the \$10 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to billionaire Mark Walter.
Initially, outgoing owner Wyc Grousbeck was set to remain CEO and governor through the 2027-28 season. But with his stake now below the NBA’s 15% ownership threshold, Chisholm will step in as the franchise’s governor.
Still, both men — Chisholm, a proud Massachusetts native and lifelong Celtics supporter, and Grousbeck — are expected to work side by side in leading the team, keeping the original transition plan intact.
The Celtics remain one of the NBA’s most storied franchises, boasting a league-record 18 championships, with their latest triumph coming in 2024.
