Ski Lift Collapse At Spanish Resort Leaves Dozens Injured

Dozens of people sustained injuries when a ski lift collapsed at the Astun ski resort in Spain’s Pyrenees mountains, emergency officials reported.

The incident occurred around 12:00 p.m. local time, resulting in approximately 30 injuries, according to the Aragon Civil Protection press office. Ten individuals were transported to hospitals, with two requiring "maximum priority" care and another two needing urgent medical attention. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

Details of the Collapse

The ski lift, towering over 15 meters (about 49 feet), partially collapsed when a pulley malfunctioned, according to the Spanish Civil Guard. The failure destabilized the lift’s chairs, causing some to turn upside down.

Witnesses described the chaos. “It’s like a cable came off, the chairs bounced, and people were thrown off,” one told Spanish broadcaster RTVE.

Video footage from the scene showed stranded skiers standing in the snow as authorities worked to evacuate them. By 3:00 p.m. local time, all individuals trapped by the collapse had been safely rescued, Fernando Beltrán Blazquez, the Spanish government’s delegate in Aragon, confirmed.

Response and Support

Spain’s President Pedro Sánchez expressed his concern, saying he was “shocked” by the incident. He shared that he had spoken with the president of Aragon to offer full government support.

“Our thoughts are with the injured and their families,” Sánchez said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse, ensuring the safety of the area, and offering aid to those affected.
