Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan And Wife Sentenced To Prison For Corruption
A Pakistani court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to seven years, following convictions on corruption charges. The ruling was delivered on Friday, adding to the legal challenges faced by Khan, who is already incarcerated.
The charges stem from allegations that the couple accepted a gift of land from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz in exchange for laundered funds. Prosecutors contend that Riaz used the laundered money—amounting to £190 million ($240 million) returned to Pakistan by British authorities in 2022—to pay fines imposed in a separate case. The funds, which should have been deposited into Pakistan’s national treasury, were allegedly misused with Khan's approval while he was in office.
Khan has consistently denied any wrongdoing, labeling the charges as politically motivated efforts by his rivals to block his return to power. Since his removal through a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022, Khan has faced multiple legal challenges.
Prior to this latest verdict, Khan had been convicted in three separate cases on charges including corruption, breaching official secrecy laws, and violating marriage regulations. He received sentences of 10, 14, and seven years for these offenses, which, under Pakistani law, are to be served concurrently. As a result, he will serve the longest of the sentences handed down.
Khan’s legal team has announced plans to challenge the verdicts, maintaining his innocence and framing the cases as part of a broader political vendetta.
