Bolsonaro Criticizes Supreme Court Over Travel Ban Appeal Rejection
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro criticized the nation’s Supreme Court on Saturday, accusing it of targeting him politically after his appeal to lift a travel ban was denied.
Speaking at the Brasilia airport, Bolsonaro addressed the court's decision that prevents him from traveling to the United States to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration. “This is massive political persecution by one individual,” Bolsonaro remarked, referencing the ongoing legal actions against him.
Legal Battle Over Travel Ban
Bolsonaro’s legal team filed an appeal late Thursday, arguing that the former president had fully complied with the Supreme Court’s precautionary measures and had no intention of fleeing the country.
Despite these claims, Justice Alexandre de Moraes upheld the previous ruling, maintaining the ban and denying the return of Bolsonaro’s passport. The court’s decision, issued just hours after the appeal, solidifies the restriction first imposed in February 2024.
Passport Confiscation and Political Context
The Supreme Court ordered Bolsonaro’s passport to be seized earlier this year as part of a broader investigation into allegations that he plotted a coup following his 2022 election defeat. The ruling also barred him from seeking public office until 2030.
Bolsonaro, often referred to as the "Trump of the Tropics" for his populist political style, denied any wrongdoing and insists that he is being unfairly targeted by the judiciary.
Farewell at the Airport
At the airport, Bolsonaro bid farewell to his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, who will attend Trump’s inauguration in his place. Bolsonaro claimed he had been personally invited to the January 20 event, further emphasizing the significance of his desire to travel.
As Bolsonaro navigates his legal challenges and political future, the rejection of his travel appeal adds another layer of tension to Brazil's polarized political landscape.
