Michelle Obama To Skip Trump's Inauguration: Breaking Tradition With A Bold Statement

In a surprising turn of events, former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration next week, her office confirmed on Tuesday without offering a reason for the decision.

“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” read a statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama.

This move marks a significant departure from the usual protocol, where former presidents and their spouses typically attend the ceremony. Former President George W. Bush and Laura Bush have confirmed their attendance, as have Bill and Hillary Clinton, according to sources close to CNN.

Michelle Obama’s absence extends beyond this event. She also did not attend a recent memorial service for former President Jimmy Carter, opting to remain in Hawaii. Barack Obama attended the service at the National Cathedral in Washington, where he was seen engaging in conversation with Trump.

Other former first ladies, including Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush, attended the Carter memorial.

Michelle Obama has been vocal about her disdain for Trump, accusing him of endangering her family's safety with his rhetoric. Despite these feelings, she set them aside in 2017, welcoming the Trumps to the White House for tea before his first inauguration. However, she later reflected on the experience with discomfort.

“There were tears, there was that emotion. But then to sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display – there was no diversity, no color, no reflection of the broader sense of America,” she shared in a 2023 podcast.

Notably, the Trumps did not attend President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021, amidst Trump’s unfounded claims of election victory.

Michelle Obama’s decision to skip Trump’s inauguration sends a powerful message, adding another layer to the complex legacy of presidential transitions in modern history.
