John Mahama Sworn In As Ghana's President Amid Celebration In Accra

John Mahama was officially sworn in as Ghana's president during a vibrant ceremony at Black Star Square in Accra on Tuesday. He succeeds outgoing president Nana Akufo-Addo, who completed two terms marked by significant economic challenges, an IMF bailout, and a debt default.

Mahama emerged victorious in the December 9 presidential election, securing 56% of the vote against the ruling party's candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 41%. This marks Mahama's second term as president, having previously served from 2013 to 2017.

Cheered on by thousands of jubilant supporters, Mahama took the oath of office, pledging to uphold Ghana's sovereignty and integrity. "I, John Dramani Mahama, do, in the name of Almighty God, swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Republic of Ghana," he declared, as Chief Justice of Ghana administered the oath.

In a historic moment, Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang was also sworn in as Ghana's first female vice president. Her appointment is seen as a significant step towards greater gender inclusion in the nation's political leadership.

The ceremony was attended by over 12 heads of state from across Africa and beyond, underscoring the regional and international significance of the event.
