Selena Gomez Sparks Controversy With Emotional Reaction To Immigration Sweeps
On Monday, Selena Gomez briefly shared—and quickly deleted—an emotional Instagram story reacting to immigration enforcement sweeps conducted by the Trump administration on Sunday. The raids led to over 1,000 arrests across the country.
In the video, the Mexican-American actress and singer, known for her role in “Emilia Pérez,” tearfully expressed her distress. “All my people are getting attacked,” Gomez said through sobs. “The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
The post included text reading “I’m sorry” next to a Mexican flag emoji. Shortly after, Gomez posted another message to her Instagram story, stating, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.” Both posts were later deleted.
CNN has reached out to Gomez’s representatives for comment, but the singer has not addressed the situation further on her social media platforms.
Later that day, Tom Homan, a former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), responded to Gomez’s remarks during an interview on Fox News. He questioned why she wasn’t expressing similar emotions for victims of fentanyl overdoses and alleged crimes committed by undocumented immigrants.
“I’ve met with hundreds of moms and dads who were separated from their children because they buried them, killed by illegal aliens,” Homan told host Sean Hannity. He also referenced unsubstantiated claims about children smuggled across the southern border, distorting federal statistics to support his argument.
The Trump administration’s immigration sweep, which led to 956 arrests, targeted what officials described as public safety and national security threats. Actions were reported in multiple locations, including California, Texas, Georgia, Colorado, Chicago, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The operation involved several agencies, including ICE, Homeland Security, and the Justice Department.
The incident has reignited debates on immigration policies, social justice, and the responsibility of public figures to use their platforms to advocate for change. Gomez’s brief but emotional posts have sparked widespread discussion, further highlighting the polarizing nature of the immigration issue in the United States.
