Tragic Loss At World Triathlon Championships: Two Athletes Pass Away During Competition In Spain
Two athletes tragically lost their lives while participating in the World Triathlon Championships in Spain on Thursday, the sport’s governing body confirmed.
Both competitors, one from Mexico and one from Great Britain, were taking part in the sprint category on the opening day of the Torremolinos-Andalucia Triathlon Championship Finals.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform you two participants (one from Mexico and one from Great Britain) have passed away at the World Triathlon Torremolinos-Andalucía AG Sprint Distance World Championships, taking place today, October 17,” said World Triathlon in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go out to their families, friends, National Federations, and the entire triathlon community.”
World Triathlon, the Spanish Federation, and the local organizing committee are in contact with the athletes' families and national federations to offer support during this incredibly difficult time.
The Mexican Triathlon Federation identified one of the athletes as 79-year-old Roger Mas Colomer. "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Mexican triathlete Roger Mas Colomer, aged 79, during his participation in the World Triathlon Championship on Thursday, October 17, in Torremolinos, Spain," the federation stated via X, formerly known as Twitter. "We deeply regret this tragedy and share in the grief of his family and friends."
British Triathlon also confirmed the death of one of its Age-Group team members but did not release the athlete’s name. “British Triathlon can confirm that one of our Age-Group Team members has sadly passed away while competing at the World Championships in Torremolinos, Spain,” read their statement. “The family has been notified, and we are providing them with support. We extend our condolences and kindly ask for privacy during this time.”
The cause of death for both competitors has not yet been revealed.
The Age-Group category consists of non-professional triathletes who compete against others in their age range, with participants ranging across five-year age bands. The race includes a 750-meter swim (0.47 miles), a 20-kilometer bike ride (12.4 miles), and a 5-kilometer run (3.1 miles).
The World Triathlon Championships, held in Torremolinos, Spain, features over 5,500 athletes, with more than 4,000 of them competing in the Age-Group category. Athletes from 79 countries are participating in this prestigious event, which runs until Sunday, concluding with the Elite Men’s Finals.
This heartbreaking incident casts a shadow over what was meant to be a celebration of athleticism and international camaraderie.
