Thomas Tuchel Named England's New Manager: A Bold Move Ahead Of 2026 World Cup

Thomas Tuchel has officially been appointed as England’s new permanent manager on an 18-month contract, set to begin on January 1, 2025. The FA confirmed the former Chelsea manager as Gareth Southgate's successor after his resignation following England's Euro 2024 final loss to Spain in July.

Tuchel, who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021, will earn £6 million a year and becomes England’s third foreign manager, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. He will be assisted by Anthony Barry, his former coaching partner at Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

In a statement, Tuchel expressed his excitement: "I am extremely proud to lead the England team. The connection I feel with the game here is deep, and it’s a privilege to work with such a talented group of players. With Anthony by my side, we’ll give everything to make England successful and make the fans proud."

FA CEO Mark Bullingham praised Tuchel's appointment, calling him "one of the best coaches in the world," and highlighted Anthony Barry's strong credentials. Bullingham revealed that the FA had a contingency plan in place before the Euros and had evaluated multiple candidates before landing on Tuchel.

"Our goal is clear: to win a major tournament. We believe Thomas and his team give us the best shot at achieving that in the 2026 World Cup," Bullingham said.

Lee Carsley, the interim manager, will still guide England through their upcoming Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland, after which Tuchel will take the reins and lead the team into the 2026 World Cup campaign.

Tuchel’s appointment ends the speculation around the position, which had intensified after Carsley, despite some early success, failed to secure the role with a disappointing loss to Greece. The FA also reportedly reached out to Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola to gauge interest before finalizing Tuchel.

While Tuchel boasts a stellar club record with teams like Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and Bayern Munich, this will be his first foray into international management. His task will be to lead England to their first major tournament triumph since the 1966 World Cup.

Southgate, Tuchel's predecessor, led England to two consecutive Euros finals but fell short both times — in 2021 to Italy on penalties and in 2024 to Spain. Southgate’s tactical approach was often criticized for being overly cautious, and Tuchel will be expected to bring a more dynamic style of play while delivering winning results.

The next World Cup, held across the USA, Mexico, and Canada, is just 18 months away. The FA will be hoping Tuchel can succeed where previous foreign managers Eriksson and Capello could not, leading England to international glory.

All eyes will be on Tuchel as he embarks on this exciting journey with England, aiming to break a six-decade-long drought and finally bring football home.
