3D Scans Reveal Untold Details Of Shackleton's Legendary Shipwreck

A groundbreaking 3D scan has revealed never-before-seen details of the HMS Endurance, the ship of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, which was discovered in 2022—over a century after it sank. The scan, obtained by CNN, offers an almost surreal view of the wreck, as if the vessel, crushed by sea ice in 1915, has been magically raised from the depths of the Weddell Sea, intact on dry land.

This remarkable imagery captures personal items from the crew, including plates scattered across the ship, a boot, and a flare gun, all still visible on deck despite the wreck resting at a depth of 3,008 meters (about 9,900 feet).

The newly-released 3D images are part of the documentary film Endurance, which will premiere at the London Film Festival on Saturday. Directed by Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin, and Natalie Hewit, the film is produced by National Geographic Documentary Films and will soon be available in UK cinemas and on Disney+.

The documentary traces Shackleton’s ill-fated voyage and the modern expedition that uncovered the wreck in 2022. This recent expedition, funded by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust (FMHT), is celebrated in the film. FMHT Chairman Donald Lamont shared, "Our aim was not only to locate, survey, and film the wreck, but also to bring the stories of Shackleton and his ship to new generations. These stories of grit and determination inspire people globally with their message of leadership and perseverance in the face of adversity."Ernest Shackleton’s polar exploration feats had already made him a legend by the time of the Endurance mission. After his career in the merchant navy, Shackleton had to cut short a 1906 Antarctic expedition due to illness, but he returned triumphantly in 1908. His accomplishments earned him a knighthood in 1909, and his final mission to Antarctica in 1915 was meant to cement his legacy with the first-ever complete crossing of the continent.

However, Endurance became trapped in the unforgiving sea ice. Shackleton displayed extraordinary leadership, ultimately leading a small party through perilous seas to South Georgia to seek help, successfully rescuing all 22 of his men still stranded on the ice. His legacy as one of history’s greatest leaders was sealed when not a single crew member was lost during the harrowing ordeal.

This new film and the vivid scans of Endurance’s final resting place continue to breathe life into Shackleton’s incredible story, inspiring new generations with his tale of courage, leadership, and unwavering determination.
