Fans of Liam Payne, the 31-year-old former member of One Direction who unexpectedly died at a hotel in Argentina last week, honored the singer with vigils throughout Europe and Argentina over the weekend.

Police said there were between 800 and 1,000 people in London's Hyde Park for a tribute to Payne on Sunday, the BBC reported.

Payne died of multiple traumas and hemorrhages after falling from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office.

A local official said Payne “had jumped from the balcony of his room” and forensic experts later said the position of his body suggested he “did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and that he could have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness.”

Officials said substances were found in Payne's hotel room and have suggested he was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs before his death, but a toxicology report is still pending.

Fans gather for a vigil with flowers and candles to pay tribute to Payne in Stockholm, Sweden. The other four former members of One Direction released a joint statement Thursday afternoon saying they were “completely devastated” by Payne’s passing and will “take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”
