In Photos: Fans Pay Tribute To Liam Payne After Sudden Death
Key Facts
Police said there were between 800 and 1,000 people in London's Hyde Park for a tribute to Payne on Sunday, the BBC reported.
Payne died of multiple traumas and hemorrhages after falling from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office.
A local official said Payne “had jumped from the balcony of his room” and forensic experts later said the position of his body suggested he “did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and that he could have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness.”
Officials said substances were found in Payne's hotel room and have suggested he was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs before his death, but a toxicology report is still pending.
Key Background
Payne was a member of One Direction—along with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson—a boy band that formed on the UK’s “The X Factor” in 2010. The band announced it was taking a hiatus in 2015 after Malik left, and each member pursued a solo career. Payne released a first solo album, LP1, in 2019, and went on to collaborate with other artists and make pop, hip-hop, Latin, and electronic music. He most recently released a single, “Teardrops,” in March.
