SUV Plows Into Exercise Crowd, Leaving 35 Dead And Dozens Injured In Zhuhai
Thirty-five people were killed in Zhuhai, southern China, after an SUV crashed into a crowd exercising at an outdoor sports center on Monday evening, police reported. The vehicle, driven by a 62-year-old man identified only as Fan, struck people around 8 p.m. at the Zhuhai Sports Center, leaving more than 40 people injured and hospitalized.
Authorities believe the driver was dissatisfied with the outcome of a recent divorce settlement. According to a police statement, Fan attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by officers who found him self-harming with a knife in his vehicle. Due to severe neck injuries, Fan is currently unconscious and undergoing emergency treatment, making interrogation impossible at this time. Police have detained him on suspicion of “endangering public safety.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for swift justice, urging officials to make every effort to treat the injured and promising that the perpetrator would be "severely punished." He condemned the incident as an act of “extreme malice,” according to CCTV, the state broadcaster.
The incident occurred just before China’s largest civil and military airshow, scheduled to run in Zhuhai from November 12 to 17. Videos circulating online, verified by CNN, show chaotic scenes of people lying injured on jogging tracks, with shoes and personal items scattered across the grounds. Many victims were middle-aged and elderly members of local fitness groups, though teenagers and children were also among the injured.
Witnesses described the horror of the SUV careening across multiple sections of the sports center, hitting groups of people on the circular track. "The vehicle struck people all around the eastern, southern, western, and northern areas," a witness surnamed Liu told the Chinese media outlet Caixin.
The Zhuhai Sports Center, a popular outdoor exercise venue for residents, has announced it will close until further notice.
Although China generally reports low violent crime rates, the country has experienced a string of recent attacks targeting random members of the public. Last month, a 50-year-old man was arrested after a knife attack near a Beijing elementary school injured five people, including three children. In September, a knife attack at a Shanghai supermarket left three dead and 15 injured, while in the same month, a bus crashed into a crowd outside a school in Shandong, killing 11 and injuring 13.
This latest incident underscores a disturbing trend of public violence in China, where shock and sorrow are mounting as more details emerge.
