Iranian Revolutionary Guards General And Pilot Killed In Helicopter Crash Amid Anti-Terror Operation
An Iranian Revolutionary Guards general and a pilot lost their lives in a helicopter crash during an anti-terror operation in the country’s southeastern region, according to state media on Monday.
The “ultra-light gyroplane” belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) encountered an accident while conducting combat operations near the border, reported IRNA news agency. The incident took place in Sirkan, located in Sistan-Baluchistan province. Those killed in the crash were identified as General Hamid Mazandarani, commander of the Nineveh Brigade of Golestan province, and Hamed Jandaghi, a pilot with the IRGC ground forces.
Since October 26, Iranian armed forces have been conducting a large-scale operation in the region, following an attack that left 10 police officers dead. Sunni Muslim militants claimed responsibility for that attack. Iranian forces have reportedly neutralized several militants and detained others as part of this mission.
Sistan-Baluchistan, one of Iran’s most impoverished regions, shares borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is home to a significant Baluch minority, a Sunni Muslim ethnic group spread across Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, contrasting with Iran's predominantly Shiite population. The province frequently experiences tensions between Iranian security forces and groups linked to the Baluch minority, radical Sunni organizations, and drug traffickers.
Helicopter accidents in Iran are rare; however, former President Ebrahim Raisi also lost his life in a helicopter crash in May, which led to a snap election. Raisi was accompanied by then-Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and six others, all of whom perished in the crash.
