Saudi Crown Prince Accuses Israel Of "Collective Genocide" In Gaza, Calls For International Action
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (widely known as MBS) has accused Israel of committing “collective genocide” in Gaza, marking one of his strongest rebukes of Israel since the conflict intensified last year.
During a high-profile gathering of Islamic leaders in Riyadh on Monday, the Kingdom’s de facto leader stated, “The Kingdom reiterates its condemnation and absolute refusal of the collective genocide committed by Israel against the brotherly Palestinian people.”
In a surprising pivot, MBS also expressed support for Iran, a departure from his 2017 comments that likened Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Adolf Hitler. The crown prince urged the international community to pressure Israel to respect Iran’s sovereignty and refrain from attacks on Iranian territories.
Saudi Arabia has increasingly shown political support for Palestinians. While the Kingdom was previously negotiating a historic normalization agreement with Israel, it recently declared that a deal would not proceed without Palestinian statehood—a demand rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Iran sent its First Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref, to the Riyadh summit, where he memorialized the deceased Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas figures Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar. Notably, Saudi Arabia opposes Iran-backed groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, despite the warming relations between Riyadh and Tehran following years of regional rivalry.
Attendees of the high-level meeting included Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syria’s Bashar al-Assad, currently engaged in a dispute over Turkey’s actions in northern Syria, were also present.
The gathering aimed to “unify positions” and “exert pressure” on the global stage to end ongoing hostilities and achieve lasting peace in the region, according to Saudi’s state news agency.
