Ariana Grande Reclaims Her Full Name In ‘Wicked’ Credits After Reuniting With Estranged Father
American singer and actress Ariana Grande has restored her full birth name in the credits of her upcoming film, Wicked, after rekindling her relationship with her father. The credits will now read "Ariana Grande-Butera" as a nod to her family heritage, according to E! News.
This decision reflects a turning point in Grande’s personal life, as her full name combines her mother Joan Grande’s surname with her father Ed Butera’s last name. The name change highlights the healing of her relationship with her father, following years of estrangement. Their reconciliation comes nearly a decade after losing contact in 2013.
Grande's father, a graphic designer, separated from her mother when the pop star was just eight years old. Their strained relationship has been a sensitive subject for the singer. In her 2018 hit song "Thank U, Next," she alluded to this emotional journey, singing, "One day I’ll walk down the aisle holding hands with my mama; I’ll be thanking my dad 'cause she grew from the drama."
In a 2014 interview with Seventeen magazine, Ariana shared how challenging it was to come to terms with their rift, describing it as "one of the hardest things" she’d had to face. "It’s private… It took me so long to be okay with it," she said. "So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn’t like that about myself. I had to accept that it’s okay not to get along with somebody and still love them."
Fans caught a glimpse of their renewed bond in 2017 when Ariana posted a throwback photo of her dad on social media, captioning it simply, "I love you." Now, by adding "Grande-Butera" to her name in Wicked, Ariana is honoring both her past and her family’s legacy.
