Mystery Drones Spark Security Concerns Over US Air Force Bases In Britain

Unidentified drones have been spotted flying over three United States Air Force (USAF) bases in Britain, prompting an investigation by both nations. The incursions occurred between Wednesday and Saturday over the Royal Air Force’s Lakenheath, Mildenhall, and Feltwell bases, all located in eastern England and used by the USAF.

A spokesperson for the US Air Forces in Europe confirmed the sightings but assured the public that "none of the incursions impacted base residents or critical infrastructure." According to a source familiar with the situation, around five to six drones were involved, and their movements appeared coordinated. While their origin remains under investigation, they did not appear to be hobbyist drones. The source added that the drones posed no threat to the bases, and there is no evidence suggesting they gathered sensitive intelligence.

The British Ministry of Defence also addressed the incident, stating, "We take threats seriously and maintain robust measures at defence sites. This includes counter-drone security capabilities."

Both the US and UK declined to provide further details as investigations continue.

The bases, situated just a few miles apart, play critical roles in US military operations. Mildenhall is home to the only permanent American air refueling wing in Europe, while Lakenheath houses the 48th Fighter Wing, which has been integral to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq since 9/11.

This isn’t the first security incident involving these bases. In 2017, Mildenhall faced a security breach when a car attempted to ram the entrance, prompting US personnel to fire shots and briefly lock down the facility.

As authorities work to uncover the origins of these drones, the incident raises questions about the evolving nature of security threats at military installations.
