EPL Referee David Coote Suspended After Viral Video Allegedly Shows Anti-Liverpool Remarks

English Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended pending an investigation after a video surfaced on social media, allegedly capturing him making negative comments about Liverpool FC and the club's former manager, Jürgen Klopp.

The clip, which went viral on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, has yet to be verified by CNN. It's unclear who filmed the video, but it appears to show Coote, one of England's most seasoned referees, in conversation with another man, making critical remarks about Klopp and a previous Liverpool performance.

When asked about the video, PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), the organization representing English match officials, confirmed Coote's "suspension with immediate effect pending a full investigation." PGMOL stated it would not make further comments until the investigation is concluded. Coote has not publicly addressed the incident, and CNN has requested further comment on his behalf.

A respected figure in the EPL since 2018, Coote has officiated major matches, including Liverpool’s recent 2-0 victory over Aston Villa. However, the controversial video allegedly features him discussing a 2020 match between Liverpool and Burnley, which ended in a 1-1 draw. During that game, Klopp openly criticized Coote's officiating decisions, and in the clip, Coote reportedly uses expletives to describe Klopp, calling him "arrogant."

Coote has overseen multiple Liverpool matches in recent years, serving either as the on-field referee or in a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) role. In light of the video's circulation, CNN reached out to both Liverpool FC and the Premier League for comments, and the Football Association (FA) also confirmed its awareness of the situation and its own ongoing investigation.
