Russian National Detained In Paris Over Alleged Olympic Disruption Plot

A Russian national has been detained and placed under preliminary investigation in Paris over fears he was planning to disrupt the Olympic Games, the local prosecutor’s office informed CNN on Tuesday.

French authorities searched the man’s residence under an administrative order and discovered evidence suggesting he was preparing “events likely to lead to destabilization during the Olympic Games,” according to the prosecutor’s office.

The man was placed under preliminary investigation and detained on Tuesday, suspected of “intelligence with a foreign power with a view to provoking hostilities in France,” the prosecutor’s office added. If convicted, the crime carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

No further details about the man’s alleged plans have been released.

The Olympic Games are set to begin this week, with the official opening ceremony scheduled for Friday evening in central Paris.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin stated last week that approximately 4,000 people had been denied permission to attend Olympic-related events, with authorities “paying particular attention to Russian and Belarusian citizens.”

This news comes amid reports that the opening ceremony might be jeopardized by a potential strike action by more than 200 dancers scheduled to perform.

“Negotiations are underway,” Lucie Sorin, a delegate for the dancers’ FSA-CGT union, told CNN on Tuesday, but there is still a strike notice in place for Friday, she added.

On Monday, around 220 dancers halted a rehearsal along the banks of Paris’ River Seine – the location for the opening ceremony – to protest inequalities in pay and housing conditions among the performers.

“The ceremony is in danger in a sense, yes. But it will depend on solidarity because the strike is an individual decision,” Sorin explained.

The dancers are negotiating with Paris 2024 and their employers for higher salaries and financial support for the “most precarious” performers.
