Brazilian Swimmer Ousted From Olympics For Night Out In Paris
Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira has been expelled from the Olympic Games after sneaking out of the Olympic Village to enjoy a night out in Paris with her boyfriend, fellow swimmer Gabriel Santos.
The 22-year-old athlete left the Village on July 26 without authorization following Brazil's exit from the 4x100m freestyle relay. The couple's unauthorized outing led to severe consequences after the Brazilian Olympic Committee discovered their breach of protocol.
Reports from Brazilian media indicate that when confronted about the incident, Vieira responded with abuse towards the committee, resulting in her swift expulsion and return to Brazil. The Brazilian Aquatic Sports Confederation described her reaction as "disrespectful and aggressively challenging."
Gabriel Santos, who had also been eliminated in the heats of the men’s 4x100m freestyle, was disciplined as well and has since apologized for breaking the rules.
"The Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports (CBDA) and the COB decided to punish the two athletes for leaving the Olympic Village without authorization last Friday," read a statement from the governing body. "In addition to this fact, athlete Ana Carolina disrespectfully and aggressively contested the technical decision taken by the Brazilian Swimming Team committee."
Santos received a warning, while Vieira faced the harsher penalty of immediate removal from the delegation and was sent back to Brazil.
Gustavo Otsuka, Brazil's swim team leader, emphasized the seriousness of their responsibilities: "We’re not here playing or taking a vacation. We’re here working for Brazil, for the 200 million taxpayers who are supporting us. We can’t play around here. She took a completely inappropriate position to express her dismay about the formation of the relay."
