Elon Musk Relocates Companies To Texas Amid Controversy

Elon Musk has announced plans to move his companies' headquarters out of California. On Tuesday, the billionaire shared on social media platform X that SpaceX’s headquarters will relocate from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas, a burgeoning company town in the southern part of the state. Additionally, X will be moving from San Francisco to Austin, Texas.

Musk cited the SAFETY Act, recently signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom, as the tipping point for this decision. The law prohibits school districts from requiring teachers to inform parents if a child wishes to be identified by a different gender. Musk criticized the law, stating it was “the final straw.”

“Due to this law and numerous others that have targeted both families and businesses, SpaceX will be moving its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas,” Musk posted on X.

The decision comes after one of Musk’s children petitioned a California court in 2022 to recognize her new name and gender, expressing a desire to no longer be associated with her father. Musk has faced criticism for some of his statements on X regarding gender identity issues.

In a follow-up post, Musk expressed frustration over the rising violent crime near the building where X is located in San Francisco.

Musk has shown a preference for Texas over the past few years. In February, SpaceX filed to move its business incorporation from Delaware to Texas, following a Delaware state judge's decision to nullify Musk’s 2018 Tesla compensation package, which a shareholder had challenged as excessive.

In 2021, Musk announced plans to relocate Tesla’s headquarters from the Bay Area to Austin, Texas. He also revealed in December 2020 that he had moved his personal residence to Texas.
