Biden Faces COVID-19 And Political Pressure Amid Re-Election Campaign

President Joe Biden returned to Delaware on Wednesday night after testing positive for COVID-19 while on the campaign trail in Las Vegas. The 81-year-old president, whose political future is under scrutiny due to age-related concerns, appeared visibly fatigued as he disembarked from Air Force One. Biden, initially without a mask, moved slowly and paused several times before finally putting on a mask inside the SUV that transported him to Rehoboth Beach.

Biden's struggle to maintain his re-election bid has intensified following private conversations with three top Congressional Democrats. These discussions, which have leaked out, reveal a consensus that Biden should step down from the race. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi reportedly told Biden that he cannot defeat former President Donald Trump and risks jeopardizing the Democrats' chances in Congress. Similarly, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have advised Biden to withdraw from the race.

Representative Adam Schiff has also voiced his concerns, telling Democratic donors that Biden's unpopularity could harm the party's prospects. In a statement, Schiff said, "While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden's alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch and secure his legacy by allowing us to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election."

Publicly, Biden remains defiant about staying in the race, but behind the scenes, his stance is reportedly softening. CNN quoted a senior Biden adviser who noted that the president has become "more receptive" to the idea of ending his re-election hopes and has been inquiring about Vice President Kamala Harris's chances of winning.

The Democratic National Convention, initially set for a virtual nomination of Biden in late July due to Ohio's early ballot deadline, has been postponed to the first week of August. This delay provides Biden additional time to consider his political future while isolating at his Rehoboth Beach home.

In a recent interview, Biden stated he would only drop out if doctors advised him to for medical reasons. On Wednesday, Biden tested positive for COVID-19 after developing a runny nose and a cough. He boarded Air Force One using the shorter set of stairs and, before boarding, gave a thumbs-up from his limousine, saying, "I feel good."

The White House physician confirmed that Biden is experiencing "general malaise" but is vaccinated, boosted, and has started a course of Paxlovid. The president will continue to fulfill his duties while in isolation.

Janet Murguía, CEO of Latino civil rights organization UnidosUS, announced Biden's positive test, explaining his absence from a scheduled Las Vegas event. This marks the third time Biden has tested positive for COVID-19, with previous occurrences in July 2022.

In a fundraising email, Biden reassured supporters, saying, "I’m doing just fine, and I’m still as committed as ever to holding Donald Trump and his rich cronies accountable. Thanks for standing with me."

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Biden will "continue to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation." The president's doctor added that Biden's symptoms remain mild and his temperature is normal.
