‘Despicable Me 4’ Sold The Most AMC Theatres Merch Of Any Film—Except ‘The Eras Tour
KEY FACTS
"Despicable Me 4," which was released on Wednesday and became the seventh-biggest opening of the year, gave AMC its busiest domestic Wednesday through Sunday period in 2024 so far with 4.2 million visitors.
The day of the release also generated the third-highest food and beverage revenue for the company for any Wednesday in AMC’s 104-year history, according to CEO Adam Aron.
The theater chain also marked the opening of "Despicable Me 4" with the release of movie-themed merchandise, including a $30 popcorn bucket, several custom Funko POP! figurines, T-shirts and other items.
“Despicable Me 4" sold more AMC merchandise than any other film since the business launched the venture in 2022, with the exception of merch made for the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” film last year, some of which sold out without hours of being released.
While "Despicable Me 4" clearly spurred millions of moviegoers to buy tickets to the theater—it grossed $122.6 million in its first five days—Aron said it was also important to note the rise in attendance was “driven by the wide-ranging appeal of several movies that offer distinct and diverse options” (other films that performed well over the holiday weekend include “Inside Out 2” and “A Quiet Place: Day One”).
BIG NUMBER
12.7%. That's how much AMC Entertainment stock was up as of 11:15 a.m. Monday, trading at $5.68 per share.
TANGENT
"Despicable Me 4” is the second animated film to be released this summer that kicked AMC attendance into high gear. "Inside Out 2," the first film of the year to gross $1 billion globally, helped to send almost 4 million moviegoers to AMC in the first two days of its theatrical run, marking the two best days of the year so far for the company. The same weekend “Inside Out 2” was released, other high-performing films like “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" were also in theaters.
