Biden's Diplomatic Balancing Act: Meeting Families Of Gaza Hostages And Israeli PM Amid Critical Negotiations
President Joe Biden is set to meet with the families of Americans believed to be held hostage in Gaza this week, following a promise from his national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, during a meeting on Monday. A source informed CNN that Biden will connect with these families soon.
Additionally, Biden is expected to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday. The exact timing of this meeting has been uncertain due to Biden's recovery from Covid-19. After isolating at his Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, home, Biden is slated to return to the White House on Tuesday afternoon.
Currently, there are eight dual-American citizens believed to be captive in Gaza, with three confirmed dead. The Biden administration has not provided updates on the status of the remaining five hostages.
These meetings coincide with ongoing efforts for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, a proposal that Biden has been advocating for months without finalization.
In a call to Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign headquarters on Monday, Biden emphasized the importance of maintaining US alliances, pursuing peace, and securing the hostages' release, hinting at possible progress.
“I’ve been working very closely with the Israelis and the Palestinians to end the Gaza conflict, achieve Middle East peace, and bring all hostages home. I think we’re on the verge of accomplishing that,” Biden stated.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has likened the hostage deal between Israel and Hamas to being "inside the 10-yard line," though challenges remain. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller reiterated ongoing discussions with mediators and the Israeli government, but cautioned against predicting a resolution timeline.
Netanyahu will travel to Washington, DC, to address Congress and meet with Biden and Harris. However, Miller did not confirm whether a deal would be reached by then.
