Tragedy In Ethiopia: Over 71 Killed As Overloaded Truck Plunges Into River

At least 71 people lost their lives in Ethiopia after a truck carrying passengers veered off course and plunged into a river. The heartbreaking incident occurred in the Bona district of the southern Sidama region, as confirmed by the regional government’s spokesperson and an official statement.

The accident, which took place on Sunday, was detailed in a statement issued by the regional communication bureau. Wosenyeleh Simion, spokesperson for the Sidama regional government, confirmed the death toll on Monday, reporting 68 men and three women among the deceased.

“Five individuals are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Bona General Hospital,” Wosenyeleh added.

The truck reportedly missed a bridge and plummeted into a river on a treacherous stretch of road notorious for its sharp bends. According to traffic police, the truck was overloaded, which likely contributed to the tragic crash. Many of the passengers were returning from a wedding ceremony, with some families losing multiple loved ones in the accident.

The state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation corroborated that the passengers were en route to a wedding when the tragedy occurred.

Initially, the regional communication bureau reported a death toll of 60 in a statement released late Sunday, but the number has since risen as more information emerged.

Ethiopia has a troubling history of deadly traffic accidents, often attributed to poorly maintained vehicles and lax driving standards. In 2018, a similar tragedy claimed the lives of 38 people—mostly students—when a bus fell into a ravine in the country’s mountainous north.

This latest disaster underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement of vehicle regulations in Ethiopia to prevent further loss of life.
