Israel Launches Unprecedented Air Campaign in Syria Following Assad’s Fall

In a historic escalation, Israel has conducted one of its largest military air campaigns, striking over 250 strategic targets across Syria within 48 hours following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's government. The operation, reported by Israeli military radio **Galei Tzahal** on December 9, targeted critical military infrastructure, including airbases, missile facilities, and research centers.

A Massive Military Offensive

The widespread strikes reached deep into Syrian territory, with simultaneous operations hitting multiple locations. Targets included helicopter facilities at Aqraba airfield near Damascus, electronic warfare installations near Al-Bahdaliye, and scientific research centers in Barzeh, Jamraya, and Masyaf.

The offensive also extended to northern Syria, with strikes reported at Qamishli airport and the 54th Regiment in Hasaka province, showcasing the geographic breadth of Israel's campaign.

“This is one of the largest offensive operations in Air Force history,” Israeli military sources told **Galei Tzahal**.

Major strikes were also reported in Homs and along Syria’s Mediterranean coast, including the port of Latakia. The targeting of key military installations indicates Israel's intent to neutralize any threats emanating from Syria in the wake of Assad’s regime collapse.

Global Reactions to the Escalation

The United Nations voiced alarm over the escalating conflict, citing concerns about violations of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement in the Golan Heights. A spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General called for restraint from all parties involved.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the military operations, reaffirming Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights and emphasizing the strategic importance of neutralizing potential threats. “The Golan Heights will remain permanently under Israeli control,” Netanyahu stated, taking a firm stance amid the shifting dynamics in Syria.

Meanwhile, the Arab world has strongly condemned Israel’s actions. Qatar, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia criticized the military incursions and denounced Israel’s seizure of land near the occupied Golan Heights.

Qatar’s foreign ministry described the air campaign as a “dangerous development and a blatant attack on Syria’s sovereignty and unity, as well as a flagrant violation of international law.”

A New Chapter in Syrian Conflict

The timing of Israel’s operation comes as Syria’s opposition leadership struggles to stabilize the country and gain control of its fractured military assets. The collapse of Assad’s regime has left Syria vulnerable, with its air defense systems and military capabilities reportedly in disarray.

Observers suggest that Israel’s operation seeks to prevent military assets from falling into the hands of hostile groups, including Iran-backed militias and other factions that could emerge as threats to Israeli security.

Looking Ahead

The unprecedented Israeli air campaign signals a turning point in the region's dynamics, as the power vacuum left by Assad’s departure continues to unsettle Syria and its neighbors. The international community watches with concern, fearing further instability in an already war-torn country.

The fallout from these developments will likely shape the future of the Middle East, as regional powers and global actors scramble to respond to the new reality on the ground.
