Michael Vick Returns Home: NFL Legend Set To Coach Norfolk State
Four-time NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick has announced that he will take the reins as the next head coach of Norfolk State University’s football program.
The 44-year-old Newport News native shared the news on his Facebook page on Tuesday.
“It’s an honor to announce that I’ll be the new head coach of Norfolk State University… looking forward to coming back home,” Vick wrote in the post.
However, Norfolk State has yet to officially confirm the appointment. CNN has reached out to the university for comment.
Vick’s Unconventional Path to Coaching
Although Vick has never officially held a coaching position, he briefly ventured into the field in 2018 when he was announced as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Legends of the now-defunct Alliance of American Football (AAF). However, he stepped away before the season began, and the league folded shortly thereafter.
Despite this, Vick brings an impressive NFL resume to the table. A revolutionary figure in football, he transformed the quarterback position with his dual-threat capabilities. With 6,109 rushing yards, Vick remains the NFL’s all-time leader in quarterback rushing yards—a record that current Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson is rapidly closing in on, trailing by just 108 yards.
A Career of Highs and Lows
Drafted as the No. 1 overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001, Vick signed a landmark 10-year, $130 million contract in 2004. However, his career took a dramatic downturn in 2007 following his involvement in an illegal dogfighting ring, which led to an indefinite suspension from the NFL.
Vick pleaded guilty to federal charges, receiving a 23-month prison sentence. After serving 21 months in prison and completing two months of home confinement, he was reinstated to the NFL in 2009, earning a second chance with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Vick spent five seasons with the Eagles, followed by brief stints with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers before retiring in 2017.
Reviving Norfolk State Football
Vick now faces the challenge of reviving Norfolk State’s football program, which struggled to a 4-8 record this past season. The Spartans, a Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team, are part of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and represent Norfolk State, a historically Black university (HBCU).
If confirmed, Vick’s leadership and experience could provide the spark Norfolk State needs to climb the ranks of college football while offering him a chance to give back to his hometown community.
As fans await official confirmation from Norfolk State, one thing is clear: Michael Vick’s journey has come full circle, and he’s ready to make his mark in a new role—this time, on the sidelines.
