In a dramatic turn of events, President-elect Donald Trump has urged Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to appoint Lara Trump, his daughter-in-law, to fill the soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat of Marco Rubio. Rubio, the current Republican Senator from Florida, is set to become Secretary of State in the incoming administration. However, the decision rests with DeSantis, and the situation underscores the complex dynamics between the two GOP heavyweights.


A Test of Loyalty and Strategy


Lara Trump, who recently announced her resignation as co-chair of the Republican National Committee, has expressed a strong interest in the role. Her potential appointment has sparked a whirlwind of speculation about DeSantis’s next move. Sources close to the governor say he is seriously considering her candidacy but is weighing other seasoned Florida politicians, including Attorney General Ashley Moody and former statehouse speaker Jose Oliva.


“The governor has a choice,” said Florida state lawmaker Randy Fine, a Trump ally. “Does he want to rebuild his relationship with Trump and give the president-elect what he’s asking for, or does he want to move in a different direction?”


Lara Trump’s Political Aspirations


Lara Trump, married to Eric Trump, has been a prominent figure in Republican politics but has never held public office. She recently told the Associated Press, “It is something I would seriously consider,” when asked about her interest in the Senate seat. A North Carolina native, she previously dismissed the idea of running for Senate there, citing family obligations.


Her appointment would mark her first formal foray into elected office, but she has strong support from Trump loyalists. Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and Sen. Rick Scott have both endorsed her candidacy, with Scott calling her “the right person for the job.” National voices, like Alabama Senator Katie Boyd Britt, have also praised her as a “tremendous pick.”



DeSantis’s Calculations


The decision comes at a pivotal moment for DeSantis, who has faced a rocky relationship with Trump after their contentious campaigns during the GOP primary. While appointing Lara Trump could mend fences, it’s unclear whether DeSantis will prioritize loyalty to Trump over his own political aspirations.


Sources indicate DeSantis is also eyeing a future role in the Trump administration, with some speculating he could be a candidate for Secretary of Defense. DeSantis’s allies view such a move as a strategic way to maintain his national profile while leaving his options open for a potential 2028 presidential run.


 A Divided GOP


The potential appointment of Lara Trump has further divided the Republican Party in Florida. While Trump supporters view her as a unifying figure who can energize the GOP base, others question her lack of experience and argue for a seasoned politician to take Rubio’s place.
