Russia’s Escalating Aerial Assaults Leave Ukraine In Peril On Christmas Morning

Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure overnight into Wednesday, causing widespread explosions across the country and plunging Ukraine into even greater uncertainty as the war stretches into its third brutal winter. Local authorities reported significant damage, particularly to civilian buildings and critical energy systems.

In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, located just 20 miles from the Russian border, at least three people were injured, and several residential buildings were destroyed. Ukrainian national police confirmed that seven missile strikes targeted the city, while regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov provided additional details about the extent of the bombardment.

"Russia has launched a large-scale attack on the energy sector once again," Ukraine’s Energy Minister German Halushchenko wrote on Facebook. In response, Ukraine's energy operator implemented emergency blackouts in several regions to mitigate the damage.

The escalation comes amid rising tensions as Poland responded by scrambling fighter jets in response to a Russian missile threat that targeted western Ukraine, according to the Polish Operational Command.

This attack follows a deadly Russian strike on Christmas Eve in the city of Kryvyi Rih, President Zelensky's hometown. A Russian missile hit a residential building, killing at least one person and injuring 17 others.

In another deadly attack last Friday, a missile strike on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, killed one person and damaged several embassies. This came just one day after Russian President Vladimir Putin challenged Ukraine to a "duel" during his year-end conference, a remark that led President Zelensky to call Putin a "dumbass."

As the war enters another harsh winter, Ukraine remains under relentless attack, with both civilians and critical infrastructure bearing the brunt of Russia's bombardments.
