Court Upholds $5M Verdict Against Trump In Carroll Sexual Abuse Case

A federal appeals court upheld a jury’s verdict finding former President Donald Trump sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll and denied his request for a new trial.

Trump had challenged the $5 million civil verdict, arguing that the trial judge made multiple errors, including allowing testimony from two other women who claimed Trump had also sexually assaulted them.

However, the appeals court concluded that the trial judge acted within his discretion in ruling on the evidence. Even if minor errors occurred, the court stated that Carroll’s strong case outweighed any potential issues, rendering a new trial unnecessary.

“Both E. Jean Carroll and I are gratified by today’s decision. We thank the Second Circuit for its careful consideration of the parties’ arguments,” said Roberta Kaplan, Carroll’s attorney.

In addition to the $5 million verdict, a separate jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million after finding that Trump defamed her by denying the allegations. Trump has appealed this verdict as well.

Carroll alleged that Trump raped her in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in the 1990s and later defamed her by denying the claim, stating she wasn’t his type, and accusing her of fabricating the story to boost book sales. Trump denied all allegations and does not face jail time due to the civil nature of the case.

While the jury found that Trump sexually abused Carroll, sufficient to establish liability for battery, they did not conclude that Carroll proved he had raped her.

Carroll filed the lawsuit under New York State’s “Adult Survivors Act,” which created a temporary window allowing survivors of sexual assault to pursue claims despite expired statutes of limitation.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s spokesperson and the incoming White House communications director, announced plans to continue appealing the verdicts.

“The American people have re-elected President Trump with an overwhelming mandate, and they demand an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and a swift dismissal of all the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded Carroll hoax. These cases will continue to be appealed. We look forward to uniting our country under the new administration as President Trump makes America great again,” Cheung stated.

The legal battles mark a significant chapter in Trump’s post-presidency as he continues to face scrutiny over his past conduct while seeking to return to the White House.
