Tragedy Near Yabatech: Student Gunned Down In Suspected Cult Clash
A student of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was tragically shot dead in what authorities suspect was a cult-related attack.
The shocking incident occurred on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, shortly after students had concluded their examinations for the day.
According to The Punch, the victim was walking toward the back gate of the institution when he was ambushed by a group of armed men. Eyewitnesses said the attackers pulled out a gun and shot him at close range before fleeing the scene.
A student who witnessed the incident said the campus erupted in chaos as students scrambled for safety. “He had just finished writing his exams and was heading towards the back gate when some boys approached and shot him twice. It all happened so fast,” the student recounted.
Another student, who chose to remain anonymous, added that the attackers searched the victim’s bag after the shooting and reportedly retrieved a firearm and a bullet.
“It looked like a cult attack. The victim appeared to have been armed. After shooting him, they checked his bag and took out a gun and a bullet. They made sure he was dead before they left,” the student said.
A source within the institution linked the incident to an ongoing feud between rival cult groups. “This killing seems like retaliation for a shooting that happened last week. A suspected cult member was shot but survived. This looks like payback,” the source claimed.
However, the school’s Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Adams, distanced the institution from the incident, stating that it did not occur on school grounds. “The incident happened at a lounge close to the college, not within the campus. There is no cult-related activity within the college,” Adams insisted.
Confirming the attack, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the victim was gunned down by members of a rival cult group. He also revealed that seven suspects had been arrested in connection with the case, and investigations are ongoing.
“On Tuesday at about 3 p.m., we received a distress call at Sabo Division that a suspected cultist was shot dead by rival members in the Yaba area,” Hundeyin said.
He added, “Our patrol team arrived promptly at the scene and found the victim lying in a pool of blood. Upon inspection, we observed visible bullet wounds. Four rounds of live ammunition and charms were recovered from the deceased’s pocket. The body has been taken to the morgue for autopsy.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack as the school community reels from the tragedy.
